PROTECT THE UNEMPLOYED. SAVE OUR ONE-STOPS.

SUMMER RECESS DAYS OF ACTION: AUGUST 1 - 12, 2011

Join the California Workforce Association's statewide Summer Recess Days of Action by hosting a local Open House event during legislative recess.

SUMMER RECESS DAYS OF ACTION: AUGUST 1 - 12, 2011

In the summer of 2010, CWA helped coordinate One-Stop Open House events with over 20 Workforce Investment Boards throughout the state. The Open House events brought over 50 local, state and federal elected officials into your One-Stops, where they were able to see first hand the value the One-Stop system has for assisting in California's economic recovery.

Now is the time to bring these members and new members back to your One-Stops to reaffirm their commitment to ensure California's unemployed have the employment services and programs they need to get back to work, while ensuring that California's businesses have the workforce they need to compete. Our ability to get these members into your One-Stops during legislative recess will greatly support CWA's advocacy efforts, especially related to SB 776.

SB 776 CLOSES ONE-STOP CAREER CENTERS AND ELIMINATES SERVICES TO THE UNEMPLOYED

This bill, as amended June 15, 2011, mandates that 40% of Workforce Investment Act Title I funding be spent on training. While California's workforce investment system strongly supports the development of a highly skilled and technical workforce, and making investments in critical training programs, mandating a statewide training threshold will eliminate employment services and programs that put unemployed Californians back to work.

Despite record high unemployment with over 2,000,000 Californians unemployed, the Assembly Appropriations Committee is considering a bill, Senate Bill 776 by Mark DeSaulnier, that could trigger the closure of over 100 One-Stop Career Centers - the state's primary system for getting Californians back to work and positioning businesses to recover from the economic downturn.

Hosting Open House events will provide you the opportunity to demonstrate the impact WIBs and One-Stops have on local constituents and the local economy.
