Workforce Guidelines for Work in Energy EfficiencyThe United States Department of Energy (DOE) is developing workforce guidelines for home energy upgrades to foster the growth of a high quality residential retrofit industry and a skilled and credentialed workforce. These voluntary guidelines will benefit workers, homeowners, businesses, and training providers. Once finalized, the guidelines can be adopted by home energy retrofit programs nationwide seeking to increase the consistency and effectiveness of the work performed, and utilized by training provders to improve course curriculum and other training materials.

California Green Collar Jobs CouncilThe Green Collar Jobs Act, signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger on September 26, 2008, established the Green Collar Jobs Council under the purview of the California Workforce Investment Board (CWIB). The CWIB is charged with developing a comprehensive workforce development plan for the State as described in the Workforce Training Act of 2008 and with federal responsibilities outlined in the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. Understanding the Green EconomyWhat is a “green” industry or occupation? There are many aspects of work that could be considered green, such as new materials, methods, products, and services. However, we do not yet have a common language capturing the broad and varied nature of green industries and jobs. CWA was one of the many organizations that worked together collaboratively with the California Employment Development Department (EDD) and other states to better understand and promote the effects of clean and green technology on our economy. National Definitions for the Green EconomyThe Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published recent feedback on a national definitions for the green economy. This information will be used to guide data collection on a federal green jobs report; research will begin in FY 2011.
The California Clean Energy Workforce Training PartnershipAlmost $75 million will be invested in the Clean Energy Workforce Training Program (CEWTP) to create a well-trained workforce capable of filling the jobs necessary to promote renewable energy development, climate change strategies, vehicle fuel technology and green buildings. The California Energy Commission, the California Employment Development Department, the Employment Training Panel, and the California Workforce Investment Board, in collaboration with The Green Collar Jobs Council, are leading a statewide partnership of state agencies, educational institutions, local workforce investment boards, community organizations and employers to deliver 21st century training programs for workers with all levels of experience.
